A British businesswoman arriving in Boston for a convention found that her first evening was free, and she decided to go find a good seafood restaurant that served scrod, a Massachusetts specialty. Getting into a taxi, she asked the cab driver, „Where do you suppose I could have got scrod around here?“
The cabdriver thought for a moment and said: „Ma’am I’ve been driving this cab for thirty years now, and I must have heard that question a thousand times, but that’s the first time anyone has asked it in the pluperfect subjunctive passive.“
